UK–Nigeria Schools Debate Partnership Launched with Historic Competition

Debate Mate and Bring It On Africa TV have launched an exciting new partnership linking schools in the UK and Nigeria through the power of debate.

This summer, the two organisations co-hosted a pioneering online debate competition that brought together students from both countries. Meeting virtually, young people exchanged ideas, sharpened their reasoning, and tested their skills against one another. The event showcased the energy, creativity, and confidence of the next generation of leaders — and marked the beginning of a lasting international collaboration.

The competition captured attention across Nigeria, with national media celebrating the success of the participating schools. Premium Times reported that Nigerian students emerged as winners in the inaugural contest, while New Telegraph highlighted a ₦10 million donation from Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State, to the victorious school.

Building on this success, the partnership now enters its next phase. In December 2025, three Nigerian schools will travel to the UK to take part in a series of live debates with schools across London. These exchanges will give students the chance to develop oracy and critical thinking skills, share perspectives, and build friendships across borders. Most importantly, they will have the opportunity to learn more about each other’s cultures and communities in an atmosphere of collaboration and respect.

Debate Mate CEO Margaret McCabe said:
“We believe debate is one of the most powerful tools for empowering young people. This partnership with Bring It On Africa TV not only strengthens skills, but also fosters international understanding at a time when global connections are more important than ever.”

With the first competition already a success, December’s debates promise to be an inspiring celebration of collaboration, learning, and the voices of tomorrow.
