Success Stories

Debate Mate students continue to do themselves, their schools, and Debate Mate proud by having a strong presence on the England World School's Team and by getting into top universities.

Each year, since 1989, the England National Debating Team has comprised of the five best student debaters selected across the country. In its history, only five of those students have attended state school of which four came from the Debate Mate Graduate School. This year, Hannah Taylor was promoted to Team Captain, a first time for a state school student, and led the team to the semi-finals in Zagreb, Croatia. We’d also like to congratulate Zarina Bell-Gam who has recently been selected to represent the team in Sri Lanka in the summer of 2019. Zarina has been involved with Debate Mate for 5 years, having debated at her Secondary School before joining the Graduate School. Whilst at the Grad School she represented DM in major competitions, reaching the finals of Durham and Imperial Schools competitions, and finishing in the top 10 speakers at Cambridge Schools last year. Best of luck to Zarina as their preparation begins for next year!

This term former Debate Mate students have gone onto some of the best universities in the world, often citing what they learnt from Debate Mate as a large factor in their successes. These include: Hannah from Ursuline High School who is studying Law at Oxford; Melanie who is studying History and Politics at Oxford; Edmund who is studying Maths at Cambridge; Louis who is studying History at Cambridge; and Ella who is studying at Yale. We wish them lots of luck on their next exciting journey!
