Debate Mate Partners with Lindsays in Scotland to deliver Debate Mate Cup
18 May 2018
Debate Mate have formed a very exciting partnership with Lindsays to deliver the Debate Mate Cup in Scotland. The event was split between the Royal Faculty of Procurators in Glasgow, and the Lindsays’ Glasgow office – both inspirational venues for the students to be competing in.
The Debate Mate Cup marks the culmination of a 17-week teaching programme, where some students will have progressed from having no experience of competitive debating, to delivering structured, reasoned, and eloquent 5-minute speeches in front of their peers. The competition gave students the chance to display the skills they have developed over the course of this academic year, and compete against their rival schools in three rounds of debating.
The Debate Mate Cup kicked-off with some opening remarks from Peter Murrin, a Partner at Lindsays, who welcomed the students to the event, and wished them luck ahead of the competition. Members of the Lindsays team were involved throughout the day, with a Solicitor and a Trainee Solicitor participating in a Showcase Debate on the motion ‘THW Make Glasgow the Capital City of the UK’, before Robert Cranston, a Senior Solicitor, joined the final judging panel. After a fantastic final debate chaired by Andrew Hilland, Special Advisor to the Scotland Programme – whose unerring support this year has been greatly appreciated – Broughton High School overcame Notre Dame High School to be crowned the Scottish DMC champions – we look forward to seeing them at the DMC National Finals Day in London! This year 240 schools across the UK competed in the DMC, so to make it to the finals is a remarkable achievement! Robert closed the competition, commenting:
“The debates have been fun and the standard has been so high. It is clear that all of you have worked hard not only today but also for the last couple of months to be able to produce debates of a standard equal to or perhaps better in some cases than we see around the Scottish courts!”
Debate Mate is proud to be working with an organisation that has a history of supporting students in both Glasgow and Edinburgh, exposing them to potential career paths and developing confidence, teamwork, and effective communication – skills that our programme is proven to deliver. We sincerely thank Lindsays for their time, help, and support, and look forward to working with them again in the future!
