Deutsche Bank Debate Mate Cup

The Deutsche Bank Debate Mate Cup is the culmination of our Core Programme.

A national competition in which all of our 140 schools compete, it consists in regional rounds held at universities in London (LSE), Birmingham, Manchester and Bristol, every March.

The regional winners then take part in a Grand Final, held at the end of the academic year at a prestigious central London venue.

The 2011 Grand Final was chaired by David Miliband MP, the former Foreign Secretary, and received coverage in the Guardian.

Artemis Urban Debate League

The Artemis Urban Debate League is a cumulative tournament which takes place over three rounds across the country, and concludes with a finals-day competition for the top eight schools in the league.

Students prepare for rounds in their regular after-school clubs, and then attend rounds at host schools in their area.

Those students who are not speaking in debates are encouraged to make points from the floor before the final speakers on each team make summary speeches.

Credit Suisse Novice Cup

The Credit Suisse Novice Cup is a one day event that brings together 150 Debate Mate students at Credit Suisse’s London offices in Canary Wharf.

Students must have completed no more than one year of the Debate Mate Core Programme to be eligible to take part.

All the novice debaters compete in two rounds of debating, and the two highest scoring teams from these rounds go head to head in a bid to claim the Cup.

External competitions

Our Graduate School students are prepared for external debating competitions run by schools and universities.

Our recent success in such competitions speaks volumes for the quality of the training provided by our top mentors, who are also successful competitive debaters.

In 2014-15, our debaters have reached the semi-final of UCL Schools and the finals of Durham Schools. Four of our students were selected for trials for the England Schools debating team.  In the past, Debate Mate teams have also made it to the finals of Dulwich Schools, LSE Schools, and SOAS Schools; most significantly, two of our debaters won the Imperial College Schools competition in 2012.

Our students have also acquitted themselves impressively at university tournaments, reaching the quarter finals of the Oxford Women’s IV and the LSE Open.
